Christmas 2014

Christmas seemed to sneak up way too soon this year, did it not?  One moment, it's Thanksgiving, and the next, it's Christmas.  Just in the snap of a finger.  I don't feel like I was completely ready, but as we gathered around to enjoy one another's company and celebrate the gift of Christ, I certainly had plenty of reasons not to care about the little things that might have fallen to the wayside.
There were simply too many fun things going on;  I tried very hard to embrace the moments before they passed…

On Christmas morning, Max and Maverick awoke to a bounty of gifts from Santa.  I since have had a discussion with Mr. Claus about 'indulgence' and 'enabling.'  But he simply shrugged his shoulders, winked at me, and said, "It's Christmas, honey."

Max and Maverick giggled when they realized they had to 'escape' from their rooms Christmas morning, since the Reindeer had put up Christmas Curtains across their doors.   They burst through excitedly and peeked over the upstairs balcony to the fireplace below.   "It's Christmas," said Max.  "And Santa came!"

Max got the "MEGA THUNDERBOW" Nerf shooter that he really wanted, while Maverick got his very own set of  Legos.  Max also got books, including the complete seven-book Harry Pottery saga - we are going to start reading it together next year.   And although Maverick got a few other small things, like a Paw Patrol and his very own set of nerf guns,  he was most interested in the treat train...  of course.  The kid simply can't resist chocolate or trains!
After presents were opened, I set about checking the cinnamon rolls, and making pancakes and quiche.   We invited over the family for a brunch and it was a great new tradition.
It wasn't too far into brunch that Max and Maverick started to go on their sugar high.   They took some of the chocolate covered pretzels (graciously made and given to me by my assistant, Jan) and acted as though they were cigars.  I couldn't help but crack up over this - Max even "ashed" his on this plate and said, "N'yeah, that's the ticket, see?" like some kind of gangster.  Honestly, I don't know where he gets some of his material from, but it's hilarious.  And he's pretty convincing; Maverick follows his suit almost immediately.   I'm so glad they are friends and play together so well.

Later in the afternoon, I cooked up a green bean casserole and sweet potato pies and we hauled ourselves over to Grandma Lois and Granddaddy's  home for Christmas dinner.    Lois had cooked up an amazing smorgasbord of turkey and dressing and potatoes and quinoa salad -- it was amazing and delicious!   My mom and sister, Kara, came along as well to help scarf up the food.   I was so happy for Lois and Mike - it was their first year to share Christmas with us in their new home.  And I feel really blessed that my family and my in-laws get along so well.  It's fun having such a combined family gathering!

After we ate, we sat down together in the living room and passed presents to each other.  There were so many fun little moments.  Max got $100 from GiGi, and he nearly exploded with excitement.  She said it was the highlight of her Christmas to see him get excited.  He shouted, "Wow, $100 dollars?!" and then told GiGi exactly what he planned to do with it:   "I'm going to go to the Toy-r-us store and buy the ATAT Lego Set!"   She said, "Can I come with you?"  And Max replied, "But of course, duh!"  He's such a ham.  And Maverick, true to his nature, lost his mind over a tin of cookies and a music box with a train in it.  He's so sweet.  I think this was Lois' favorite part - she could have watched him watch that train all day!

Apparently, I am addicted to Christmas Lights.  What can I say?  I LOVE Christmas lights, and I enjoy putting the effort into decorating my home every year.  There is nothing like driving up to the home, after a long day at work, and seeing your home lit up in happy colors and bursting with light.   It makes me happy.
Sometimes our neighborhood association has a contest for Christmas Lights... and this year, I won the grand prize!   (Again.)  What can I say?  I know I have a problem.   I just don't intend to give it up.

Today's Maxism...

Me: "Good morning, Max!"...
Max: (non-committal grunt)
Me: "It's Thanksgiving, buddy."
Max: "yeah."
Me: "well, guess what I'm thankful for?"
Max (sarcastically): "oh, let me read your mind - me!"
Me (slightly miffed): "actually, I was gonna say pie."
Max: "hm, that's too bad. Because I'm sweeter than pie."

A bit tart, I think....

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today's Maxism:

Upon the reveal of his school photos this evening:

"That's my goofy smile, Mommy. I thought you'd like it."

And oh, what a difference a year makes:

Max 2013 - Kindergarten vs Max 2014 - First Grade
You can guess by judging from this picture that Max is REALLY enjoying First Grade.  His teacher is making a wonderful difference - she is always calm and in control.  He loves her.   She also helped him make a huge leap up in school - he got in to the QUEST program for creative thinking.   It was a great move for him.  He comes home and talks about QUEST nearly every day!    Doing good, buddy - I'm so proud of you and I love to see you this happy!

Today's Maxism:

A first: Max was awake before me this morning. He wandered sleepily up to me while I was still in bed and...

Me: "hey Max, you're up early."...
Max (eyes suddenly snap open): "mommy, did you know, there is a speed limit in space?!"
Me (groggily): "really? What is it?"
Max: "you can't go faster than the speed of light. Otherwise your space ship will expand and just keep expanding and expanding and expanding and eventually - just explode!"
Me: ....
Max: "you know, just BOOM!" (throws hands out, mimics flailing and then throws himself to the floor). "oh no, I'm in a worm hole!"

It's 6:45 am.

Today's Maxism:
My phone rings. I answer. Max is on the other line.
Guess the movie.

Max: "Who is this?"
Me: "Mom-."
Max: "What's your operating number?"...
Me: "Um... Max, better put Daddy on the phone."
-pause-
Max: "Ugh, boring conversation anyway."

Thirteen years ago, I was fighting the typical morning traffic to get to work, running a few minutes behind on I35, when I heard Bob Cole on the radio morning show announce that a plane had hit the World Trade Center in New York City. ... In that moment, the event was 'Probably an accident, a terrible one...big fire, more details to follow.' But a few moments later, as I parked my truck in front of the office, Bob announced that another commercial airliner had struck the second WTC tower.

It didn't really sink in at the time, what he was talking about. Admittedly, I was young and ignorant - I didn't even know exactly which buildings the 'World Trade Center Towers' were (I had referred to them as the Twin Towers) - and honestly, I was more stressed about being 5 minutes late to my desk. Still, as I killed the engine and cut off the radio, something in the tone of Bob's voice, which was normally calm and reassuring, had unsettled me. It wasn't an 'accident' anymore.

Sneaking into the office was easy. Everyone was already gathered around the 12" TV in the boss' office. It was set up high and rather precariously on a tall black filing cabinet, so despite the crowd in the tiny room, I easily caught my first glimpse - live - of the burning towers.

It's an odd sensation; awakening.

I can't forget. I won't forgive.

Today's Maxism:

Max: "we went to the library today and I checked out a book."
Me: "sounds fun- what's the book called?"...
Max: "it's called 'Dairy of a Spider.'"
Me: "'Dairy of a Spider?' What's it about?"
Max: "Well, it's about a spider, and he does all these things, like, gets a treat from the Dairy Queen and stuff."
Me: "uh, really?"

I look at the cover.

Me: "Max, what's this booked called again?"
Max: "Dairy of a Spider."
Me (pointing): "I think this says DIARY."
Max (caught): "OK, fine... (then hopeful) Can WE go to Dairy Queen?"

Today's Maxism:

So, I took the boys on a little 'dinner date with mommy.' As we sat down to enjoy our meals, a fashionably dressed woman with a large Louis Vuitton purse sat at a table behind us, plopping that gigantic thing in the chair opposite herself.

Max contemplates her for a few seconds.... then he points, and announces loudly to the whole cafe:

"Look, mommy, that silly lady is on a date with her purse!"

    I am...

Rachea.  And I am a recovering Marthaholic.
There, I said it.  *sigh*   Years I wasted on perfection & trying to live up to someone else's standards.  Now I live for my own, on my own terms, & in the most unapologetic way possible.
